THE BANKNOTE

A landmark building with an iconic smokestack, The BankNote sits prominently on a hill along the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx with extraordinary views of Manhattan. Its four-buildings are home to a variety of government (including Congressman Jose Serrano), civic and private sector office tenants, non-for-profit organizations and the arts community.

Stable, professional, on-site ownership and management and an abundance of light and air distinguish this architecturally distinct property. An extensive, recently completed capital improvement program breathed new life into this former manufacturing facility and further enhanced its landmark stature.

The four-building complex totals 405,000 square feet and sits on a 178,800-square-foot lot including private parking. Exposed brick walls, large vaulted windows, concrete floors, light-infused spaces and soaring, open ceilings up to 21’ lend a historic feel to the interior spaces that appeal to a wide range of tenants.

A $25 million capital improvement program has revitalized this landmark building. Major renovations included the installation of new windows, elevators, bathrooms, mechanical systems, security systems, new entryways and lobbies, enhanced parking areas and landscaping.

Built in 1909, The BankNote is the former home of the American Banknote Company which printed U.S. and foreign currency and securities at the site. It was designated a New York City Landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2008.

A September 13, 1992 article in The New York Times noted:

Until 1941, Joseph R. Ford occupied a room in the tower with a special mission -- he attempted to counterfeit, under the most favorable conditions, the company's currency, stock certificates and other products. His efforts were carefully analyzed to improve the company's engraving, papers and inks. By 1961, The Saturday Evening Post reported that in one day over 5 million pieces of paper were processed. The company was at that time printing half of the securities of the New York Stock Exchange. By 1980, food stamps were 8 percent of sales.

A $25 million capital improvement program has revitalized this landmark building with each of the buildings receiving individual attention. Lobbies at the Lafayette, Garrison, Smokestack and Barretto entrances were completely modernized with large glass storefront openings, steel canopies, security systems, signage and finishes.

Major infrastructure upgrades included:

  • New, oversized windows affording beautiful Manhattan views and enhancing light and air
  • Renovated common areas
  • Newly modernized and finished passenger and freight elevator cabs in all buildings
  • Upgraded restrooms on each floor with new finishes and fixtures
  • Enhanced security
  • Improved circulation
  • Fully-restored and landscaped on-site parking lot
